Get your mini-skirt on! Mary Quant’s in town

The swinging sixties comes to Droitwich in October with an event celebrating the life of miniskirt pioneer Dame Mary Quant.

Mary Quant is currently the subject of a major exhibition at the V & A Museum in London, but now examples of her work are being brought to Droitwich by V & A contributor Ruth Lowe, who will talk about the early life, career, and designs of this iconic British designer.

Dame Mary is known for her sleek, streamlined and vibrant designs that revolutionised womenswear and defined the look of London in the 1960s. Her garments borrowed from men’s clothing, took risks and blurred gender lines to create ‘unisex’ clothing. She is credited with defining the look for a new generation of women who rebelled against pressure to dress like their mothers.

Ruth Lowe, an authority on Mary Quant, has appeared on the Antiques Road Show and The One Show, and was featured in the Financial Times’ monthly magazine ‘How To Spend It’. She is an avid collector of all things Quant, including an original Mary Quant designer mini car.

Organisers of the local event, Droitwich Arts Network (DAN) are keen for all generations to buy tickets and come dressed in Mary Quant inspired clothing if they wish.

Chair of DAN Helen Karakashian said, ‘It’s time to dig out those fab mini-skirts and vintage suits to relive an era that truly broke new ground in fashion and music. Mary Quant is an incredibly exciting designer and we are thrilled to welcome Ruth Lowe who will bring a slice of the V & A to Droitwich.’

The evening will include a talk on the 1960s and Mary Quant’s upbringing and career detailing the influence she has had not only on fashion but design in general including interior design.  This talk will appeal to both men and women.

During this nostalgic evening, there will be a light-hearted quiz for those who wish to take part and an opportunity to sing songs from the 60s. Light refreshments will be available but please bring your own drinks.

Please let your friends know about this event and if you would like to dress up in the 60s style that would be great!

The event will take place on Saturday 19 October, at 7.30 pm at Ombersley Memorial Hall. Tickets are £10, to include light refreshments, and there will be a raffle. Contact [email protected] Tel: 07787 227390.

Proceeds will help DAN to continue to offer local people art, music, dance, drama and creative writing activities across the town, including ArtsFest next year.
